Obtaining Your Federal Firearms License

Obtaining Your Federal Firearms License

firearms

If you are gun guru, you probably have thought about opening your own gun shop. If you are a firearms collector and would like to purchase guns and have them delivered to your front door, than the first step is obtaining your federal firearms license.

The Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and Explosives (B.A.T.F.E. or A.T.F.) is where you get the application and then you will submit it when you have completed the application (see the address below). They will be the ones that approve or give you a denial of your application and if approved they will send you your license.

Just like any license from the government, there is a fee for submitting your application. These fees very on the type of license you apply for. The BATFE has 60 days to approve or reject the application. As of 2009, the fees are:

Manufacture $150 Renewal $150
Importer $150 Renewal $150
Pawn broker $200 Renewal $90
Dealer $200 Renewal $90
Collector $30 Renewal $30

You must have a federal firearms license (FFL) in order to buy and sell guns in the United Stated as a business. Buying and selling guns is different then owning them. For more info, write the BATFE Atlanta office at:

BATFE
P.O. Box 2994
Atlanta, GA 30301

OR

Call them directly at: 404-417-2750

Just how long the U.S. Government will let us apply and obtaining your Federal Firearms License is not known. Yes, it’s true that the 2nd Amendment guarantees us the right to bear arms. However, there are those in government who like to argue that your right to bear arms does not include a right to sell or even buy arms. (This is clearly a misinterpretation of the Constitution.)  The President and Democrat Congress both seem to be highly in favor of gun control; and this could easily mean stricter regulations on firearms license in the future.

Once you are ready to apply for your F.F.L. and you are a little unsure where to start, it might be a good time to get some help. It is a lot easier to apply the right way the first time than to go back later and try to fix your mistakes. This is where having someone help you through the process to stop the mistakes before they happen.

The FFL kit can do just that. You will find all the information and instructions to do everything right the first time. Read more facts about FFL kit at http://newgundealers.blogspot.com

Traditional Muzzle Loading Firearms

Black powder is commonly called gunpowder. It is a mixture of explosive substances which consist of charcoal, sulfur, potassium nitrate and saltpeter. The mixture can instantly burn when ignited, capable of propelling bullets. Black powder is commonly used for firecrackers and also with the traditional muzzle loading firearms.

Black powder was first discovered during the 9th century in China. The mixture was discovered by a Taoist monk who is also an alchemist. The discovery has resulted in the development of gunpowder weapons of the Chinese.

The modern technology has developed the black powder used in modern firearms. The traditional black powder is still in use by many owners of the old muzzle loading firearms.

As many states provide muzzle loading hunting seasons, there are many hunters becoming interested in using muzzle loading guns also. These guns have been favored by many hunters tracing back during the Civil War.

Many people would like to know what muzzle loaders are. This question has been raised due to the issues concerning the use of other firearms instead of the traditional muzzle loaders for muzzle loading seasons. The classification of this type of firearms is usually related to its characteristic in terms of its type of ignition, style and projectile. They are commonly defined based on biased experiences of individuals rather than on facts of its ballistic power.

Hunters or users of the muzzle loading guns seem to be divided in two groups; the hunters who are just interested in hunting and the traditional hunters who value the history associated with these guns. Though these groups have different views with the firearms, they have common interests and to have a good hunt.

The reason behind the division of the two groups is the introduction of the firearm called by many as the in-line type firearm. This type employs a striker system mechanism common to recent bolt action firearms. The controversy has also been caused by advertising made by gun manufacturers which claims that the in-line types of firearms are much better in terms of ballistic power than the traditional muzzle loading firearms.

Questions have been raised that if such firearm is more powerful than the traditional ones, these types of guns should not be used for muzzle loading seasons. Due to this issue, many of the state banned the use of in-line guns for the specific hunting season.

The reason why a lot of hunters are interested with the in-line types of firearms is that these guns are similar to the new models of rifles in terms of its feel and look. All its parts such as the trigger, safety lock and the cock are located in common places which everyone is familiar. Beginners will be more comfortable with these types of rifle than the muzzle loading guns.

Another reason is the loading mechanism of in-line rifles. They are a lot easier to load than the traditional rifles. The bullet used is longer rather than the traditional round shape ball bullets.

However, the style and look of a firearm has nothing to do with its ballistic performance. It is the same with its firing mechanism whether it uses flintlock, side hammer lock, percussion cup or fuse; it does not have any relationship with its ballistics. The power of a rifle depends on the depth and twist of the barrel.

Although in-line firearms are advantageous in many aspects and are favored by hunters who are new to the game, traditional hunters still prefer to use muzzle loading guns as their primary hunting weapon because they value the history related to these firearms.

Remington: An American Legend

Early in the 1900’s, Remington began making hunting knives, household utensils, and clothing. In 1933, due to the great depression, Remington offered a controlling share to Dupont and on May 24th, Dupont acquired 60% of Remington. Dupont would become the sole owner of Remington later, and would own Remington until 1993.

Remington became the leader in trap and target equipment with their purchase of Chamberlin Trap & Target Company in 1934.

In 1940, the U.S. Government approached Remington to expand their production of ammunition through the construction of several new plants. The government wanted to build the plants and put Remington in charge of running the plants. A wise move, with World War II fast approaching. I feel this says a lot about how important Remington was and still is to the United States.

The world’s best-selling pump action shotgun was introduced in 1950. The Model 870 “Wingmaster” took the shotgun world by storm and is still outperforming their competition. Shortly after, Remington introduced the first plastic body shotshells, I guess it didn’t hurt having DuPont backing the plastic research.

The Sixties weren’t only good for hippies, as Remington introduced two of their most popular models, the Model 700 bolt-action rifle in 1962, and the Model 1100 autoloading shotgun (the father of my gun, the 11-87) in 1963. The 1100 took three years to develop.

24 years later, Remington launched Model 11-87. The 11-87 was and improvement to the original 1100. The 11-87 could take up to a three inch shell when it came out and now they have models of the 11-87 that take up to 3 1/2 inch mags. Remington has produced over 52 different versions of the 11-87, but the 1100 has made a come back in the target shooting world. The real selling point is Remington’s patented pressure compensating gas system. The 11-87 is a workhorse. Reliability and low-recoil make it a pleasure to shoot, I’ve been shooting an 11-87 Premier for close to ten years.

As the 21st Century began Remington didn’t slow down as they introduced the most significant advance in rifle and ammunition since the self-contained cartridge, the EtronX System. The EtronX is an electronic ignition system for centerfire rifles and ammunition.

The list of all Remington’s new products this decade would take two pages but here are some highlights; the MODEL 710, high performance rifle- low cost (2001), the introduction of ‘REM CHOKES’ (2002), a revamped gun safe line (2003), Model 1100 Competition released (2005), and Remington produces its first side by side models since 1910 with the Premier Side by Side line (2007).

I could go on and on about the history of this great American company. For 193 years, Remington has been on the cutting edge of the firearm industry and much more.

I’m proud to own a Remington and I’m proud to be an American. So the next time you purchase, buy American.

Using Gun Racks To Transport Your Guns

Transporting your weapons in a safe manner is a matter of vital importance.  Gun racks are a common way to safely move your rifles from one destination to another within a vehicle.  Safety is the number one concern of most gun owners and having a safe way to transport your weapons is essential.  Many people buy gun racks that may damage their vehicle as they are commonly attached through holes that need to be drilled into the automobile.  Others have problems keeping the racks attached.  This can cause further problems as firearms can fall off and discharge unexpectedly.  Buying the right brand of gun rack for your vehicle from the right manufacturer is a priority for you and the people you drive in your truck or SUV.

There are many different types of gun racks or utility racks on the market.  Purchasing one from a company who has been making them for many years is intelligent.  Too many people buy cheap versions from large department stores to find out that they are hard to install and practically useless for holding weapons.  There are racks on the market that are incredibly easy to install without drilling holes into your vehicle.  They are mounted securely providing a safe environment for you and your loved ones.

Utility racks can be used to transport almost anything from fishing poles to garden tools.  These handy creations allow people the ease of transporting large tools without taking up a lot of room.  Utility racks are basically the same as gun racks and work in the same manner.  Instead of cramming your valuable tools into the back of your truck or SUV, you can keep them new and useful by installing a convenient rack in your automobile.

Different utility and gun racks are made for different types of windows.  Adapters can also be purchased to make the rack fit properly and securely in your vehicle.  These adapters are commonly used with narrow-track sliding glass rear windows.

Installing a gun or utility rack in your vehicle cannot only provide safety to you and your family, but it can help promote longer life to your weapons and tools.  Storing and transporting your firearms, fishing poles or any other tool properly will help them remain in better condition for a longer period and provide you with many years of use.

My name is Lewis James and I have been involved with and writing about hunting sports of all kinds for many years. I have been using the gun racks manufactured by E-Z Mount Corporation in my hunting trucks and SUV’s for more than twenty years.

If you have a need for a gun/utility rack for your vehicle visit their website at http://www.EZMountCorp.com and choose the one that best fits your needs. Tell them Lewis James sent you.

Gun Safe Accessories

Now that you have the perfect gun safe to keep your firearms out of little hands or your collection safe from robbery, do you need any gun safe accessories? What type of accessories could you possibly need? Well, you never know until you see what is available, and then you find things that you simply cannot do without!

One important category of accessories to consider to protect your firearms is a dehumidifier. Many high end safes already come equipped with a dehumidifier, but if not, there are a variety of options available. One nifty option uses crystals to absorb extra moisture, so you just have to hang or place the unit in your safe. The plus side is that no batteries or outlet needed. The down side is that the moisture absorbing crystals need to be “renewed” once they are filled to capacity. This is usually done by plugging in the unit so that the built in heater can dry out the crystals. There is a color indicator that lets you know when it is time to renew the unit, but typically it is about every 6 - 8 weeks, and then the unit has to be plugged in for about 8 hours before you can place it back into your safe.

If your safe has an outlet, or a small hole in the back to run a cord, then a regular dehumidifier would be a great gun safe accessory option for you. This type of dehumidifier actually circulates the air within the safe.

The next top item on a list of must have gun safe accessories is interior lighting. Same as above, upper end safes often come with some type of lighting, but if not you have a couple of options. There are fluorescent lighting kits that can be installed, or I even have seen an interior rope light that can be installed that has a magnetic switch so that the light comes on when the safe door is opened.

If you have pistols, you can get a pistol rack to sit on a shelf in your safe that keeps your pistols nicely organized and accessible while maximizing space. You can get racks that hold from four to eight hand guns, and I have seen them in both metal and wood.

Another option for storing pistols are holsters or pistol pockets that velcro to the inside of the door of the safe. You can fit quite a few holsters on the door of your safe, freeing up a lot of room for other items.

Many safe manufacturers now offer a variety of safe interiors, and some of them are specially designed to fit on the safe door with an assortment of pockets and holsters for a wide range of items from pistols to ammo or any other small accessories you may need to store in your safe.

If you have an older safe that you would like to update, you can install an electronic safe lock that may have fancy features such as a time delay mode.

Other gun safe accessories that are handy if you use your safe for more than just guns are things like jewelry trays and small 2-4 drawer storage chests that can be placed in the safe and keep small valuables organized.

As you can, see there many options available when it comes to gun safe accessories. Though they may not all be for you, you may discover that there are some things that you simply cannot do without as they bring greater organization to your safe or helps to protect your items from rust or mildew.
